What Working With a Brand Strategist Actually Looks Like

A real brand strategy engagement is decisions, not deliverables. The phases, what it costs, and the one thing that decides whether it works.

A real brand strategy engagement is a series of decisions, not a series of deliverables. If you're expecting to receive a logo and a mood board, you're shopping for a designer. Different job.

Here's the shape of the work, so you know what you're buying before you buy it.

It starts with diagnosis

The first phase is figuring out what's actually broken. Not what you think is broken. Owners usually arrive with a self-diagnosis: we need a new website, we need social media, we need a rebrand. The strategist's first job is to pressure-test that, because the stated problem and the real one rarely match. Expect direct questions about revenue, customers, offers, and what's not working. Expect some answers you don't love.

Then decisions, in order

Positioning: what the business is, who it's for, why it matters. Offer: what you sell and how it's structured so people understand it. Message: what you say and stop saying. These get decided, written down, and committed to. This is the part that feels slow and turns out to be the whole engagement. Everything after it is execution.

Then the system gets built

Website, campaigns, lead flow. The strategy turns into things you can see and measure. Depending on the engagement, the strategist leads this directly or directs the people who build it.

What it costs and what makes it work

Serious strategy work runs from a few thousand for a focused session to five figures for a full engagement, with monthly fractional arrangements typically starting around $5K to $6K. Price reflects thinking, not hours.

But here's the part nobody puts on the sales page: the engagement succeeds or fails on the client's willingness to decide. Strategy produces choices. Choices require change. Clients who decide and act get compounding results. Clients who stall after clarity paid for a very expensive document.

If you're ready to make decisions, this work changes the trajectory of a business. If you're not, save your money until you are.
