Last month I sat down to write copy for an ad campaign and drew a blank.

Worse than writer's block. I realized I hadn't written anything from scratch in months. I'd been prompting, editing, massaging outputs. The machine had been doing the first draft for so long that my first-draft muscle went soft.

The dependency creeps

Nobody decides to outsource their thinking. It happens one convenience at a time. First it drafts the boring email. Then the proposal outline. Then the campaign concepts. Each step feels like efficiency. Then one day you sit down without the machine and find out you were paying for that convenience with your own skills.

There's research out of MIT pointing the same direction. People who lean on AI for writing show less brain engagement, and it lingers after they put the tool down. I didn't need the study. I lived it.

Where I've landed

AI handles admin, speed, and structure in my business. Meeting notes, first-pass research, formatting, the grunt work around deliverables. It saves me hours every week and I'm not giving that back.

The thinking stays mine. Strategy, positioning, the ideas, the words that carry the argument. Hand those to the machine and two things happen. The work goes generic, because the machine averages everything it's ever seen. And you go replaceable, because a client can prompt a model without paying you to sit in the middle.

Let it accelerate your job. Never let it become your job. The day it can do the whole thing without you, you've automated yourself out, and you did it voluntarily.

The machine getting smarter doesn't scare me. Me getting comfortable does.
