I Need Marketing Is Not a Strategy
When growth stalls, we need marketing is a symptom report, not a diagnosis. What's usually underneath it, and the order of operations that works.
When a business owner tells me they need marketing, I know two things. The business has a real problem, and marketing probably isn't it.
I need marketing is what people say when growth has stalled and they don't know why. It's a symptom report, not a diagnosis. And buying marketing off a symptom report is how businesses end up with a drawer full of logos, a Facebook ads receipt, and the same flat revenue.
What's usually underneath
Ask a few questions and the real problem shows up fast. What exactly do you sell? Who is it for? Why would they pick you over the guy down the street? What happens when a lead contacts you?
Most owners can't answer these in one sentence each. That's the actual problem. Marketing is an amplifier. It takes what's true about your business and makes it louder. Amplify confusion and you get louder confusion, at ad-network prices.
The order that works
Get the positioning right so the business makes sense. Structure the offer so it's easy to understand and buy. Fix the website so the next step is obvious. Then, and only then, add marketing to drive people into a system that works.
This order matters because each layer depends on the one below it. Great ads pointing at a confusing website waste money. A great website for an unclear offer wastes money. Every dollar spent above a broken layer leaks through it.
What to do instead of buying marketing
Write down what you sell in one sentence a stranger would understand. If you can't, that sentence is your first project. It costs nothing and it's worth more than any campaign you could buy this year.
