What a Fractional CMO Actually Does (and Who Shouldn't Hire One)

A fractional CMO runs your marketing strategy part-time for $5K to $12K a month instead of a $200K salary. The real job, who it's for, and who should skip it.

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who runs your strategy part-time, typically for a monthly fee between $5,000 and $12,000, instead of the $200,000-plus a full-time CMO costs. You get the thinking and the leadership without the payroll.

That's the definition. Here's what the job actually is.

The real work

The work is deciding. What the business sells, who it's for, what it says, where it says it, and what gets ignored. Most businesses don't lack marketing activity. They lack someone with the authority and experience to say we're doing this and not that and be accountable for the outcome.

In practice, that means fixing positioning first, structuring the offer so people understand it, then building the system: website, campaigns, lead flow, follow-up. Strategy first, execution second. A fractional CMO who starts with tactics is a freelancer with a better title.

Who should hire one

Businesses at an inflection point. Revenue is real, growth has stalled or gone inconsistent, and the owner knows something's off but can't name it. There's budget, there's urgency, and there's a willingness to make decisions and act on them.

Who shouldn't

Be honest with yourself here, because the wrong hire wastes everyone's time.

Don't hire a fractional CMO if you want someone to execute your existing ideas. That's a contractor. Don't hire one if you're not willing to change your positioning, your offer, or your website when the diagnosis calls for it. And don't hire one if nobody on your side can execute, because strategy without execution is a document in a drawer.

The model works when the owner wants a partner who leads. It fails when the owner wants an order-taker with a strategy title.
